It's Just Soap. What's The Big Deal?
It’s Just Soap. What’s the Big Deal?
When someone picks up a bar of handcrafted soap for the first time, a common reaction is:
“It’s just soap.”
And technically, they’re right.
Soap cleans.
That’s what it’s supposed to do.
But not all soap is created the same way, and that’s where the story gets interesting.
The Difference Starts Before the First Wash
Many commercial cleansing bars are designed to be efficient, consistent, and inexpensive to produce. Their primary goal is to remove dirt and oil from the skin.
Handcrafted soap takes a different approach.
At Latherela, every batch is carefully formulated with skin-loving oils and butters that contribute to the character of the finished bar. The ingredients are selected not only for cleansing but also for the feel they leave behind after washing.
The result is a bar that does more than simply remove what is on your skin, it creates a bathing experience.
What Is Superfatting?
One of the things that makes handcrafted soap unique is a process called superfatting.
During soapmaking, oils react with lye to create soap. A soapmaker can intentionally include more oils than are needed for the reaction. These extra oils remain in the finished bar.
This is known as the superfat.
The superfat contributes to the conditioned feeling many people notice after rinsing. Your skin feels clean, but not stripped.
If you’ve ever washed with a handcrafted bar and thought:
“Why does my skin still feel soft after the suds are gone?”
That’s often the difference.
The Ingredients Matter
Just as the quality of ingredients matters in cooking, it matters in soapmaking too.
Many of our recipes feature oils and butters traditionally appreciated in skincare, including:
- Shea Butter
- Olive Oil
- Coconut Oil
- Castor Oil
- Tallow
Each ingredient contributes something different to the finished bar, from creamy lather to hardness, longevity, and skin feel.
A thoughtfully balanced recipe can transform a daily routine into a small moment of self-care.
A Daily Ritual, Not Just a Product
Most people use soap every day.
That means a bar of soap isn’t just another item on the bathroom sink, it’s something that becomes part of your daily rhythm.
The scent that greets you in the morning.
The rich lather after a long day.
The simple comfort of a product made with care.
These small experiences add up.
Why Handcrafted Soap Appeals to So Many People
People often choose handcrafted soap because they appreciate:
- Small-batch craftsmanship
- Carefully selected ingredients
- Unique scents and designs
- A more personal bathing experience
- Supporting small businesses and makers
Every bar tells a story, from the ingredients chosen to the hands that made it.
So, What’s the Big Deal?
Maybe it is just soap.
But it’s also the first thing that touches your skin in the morning and often the last thing before bed.
It’s a product used every single day.
When something is part of your life that often, quality matters.
At Latherela, we believe soap can be simple, beautiful, and thoughtfully made. That’s the big deal.
